Course Description
Introduction to the general characteristics of water, and provides a basic understanding of the principles of cooling with water. The three major types of cooling water systems are covered and a discussion of typical cooling water problems is provided.

Topics Covered

  • General Characteristics of Water
  • Major Cooling System Types
  • Cooling Water Problems

    Objectives
List the major physical properties of water, such as density and heat capacity, list the major chemical properties of water, such as hydrogen bonding, polarity, and solvency, identify the major types of dissolved and suspended solids in cooling water, discuss the corrosive nature of water and the scaling tendencies of water, identify the three types of cooling water systems, and identify the four major problems found in cooling water systems, including corrosion, scale formation, deposit formation, and microbiological growth.
